Ice is off! Spring is here!

I’m reporting the official Ice-Off for Spring 2011 as April 13th.  It looked like it could have been last night too- but it was hard to tell if there was some residual ice along the south and west shorelines.  There appeared to be some “white” along those shorelines as though some ice remained.  It looks like it is definitely off now!

Happy Spring everyone!

Meeting Minutes for March 24th Meeting

The March 24th Meeting was called to order at 6:45pm on Thursday March 24th at the home of Manda and Jonathan Goldsberry.  All four officers were in attendance and two general members.

The meeting presentation was written by Manda Goldsberry and is available for download here.  The agenda was as follows:

  • Introductions
  • This is the start of our 4th year and we have come a long way!
  • Thank you for everyone involved in the Can Trailer and all donations.
  • We have  $713.94 as of 20th Feb.
  • Will someone check the PO Box  twice a month?
  • We only have 7 individual/family members in a given year and at $5 a membership that is only $35 toward the P.O. Box ($40), mailings etc.
  • Water Testing-  Annual cost $225
  • What do Water Test results mean?
  • Overview of meeting with Wright County Soil and Water
  • Point-Intercept Survey
  • County-wide Lake Association COLA
  • Lake Management Plan
  • Resources and Grants
  • Moving forward…What is next for the Association

Manda started the meeting with the agenda in her presentation, these are the items of note kept by myself (Jonathan Goldsberry) that were not within the presentation:

  • We could really use someone to volunteer to check the P.O. Box as it recieves quite a lot of junk mail and needs to be emptied regularly.  None of the officers regularly visit the post office.  If another member is regularly at the post office, and would like to help out, it would be greatly appreciated.
  • Manda made motion to vote on moving forward with trying to gather the money to do a point intercept survey so we can move forward with the Lake Management Plan and hopefully begin treating the lake next year.  Ron seconded the motion and all in attendance voted in favor.
  • Manda discussed the possibility of a Wright County Coalition of Lake Associations (COLA) and the formation meeting will be held April 14th. Ron motioned that we send delegates with permission to join the COLA (with join fees at $100 or less), Corynn seconded the motion and all in attendance voted in favor.
  • The last vote was motioned by Corynn to change Article 6 Section 1 of the bylaws to read: “Association will meet annually in the spring with the date set in place no later than 15 days in advance” and Article 5 Section 4b to be stricken from the bylaws.  Ron seconded the motion and all in attendance voted in favor.
  • There are several Grant and membership opportunities available to the association to help with our costs.  Please contact Manda for more information or to get involved.  We need a volunteer to come forward and help with grant writing.

The meeting was called to a close at 8:00pm.

Can Trailer

The Association would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Mark and Elain Budde for donating a trailer axel and Joe Mader for spending a lot of time building and painting a can trailer for us.  Ron Olson donated the sign and deserves our thanks as well.

I placed the trailer by the public landing right off of Johnson Street on the north edge of Legion Park.  Please bring any Copper and Aluminum Recycling that you would like to donate to the trailer at this location.

Again, a big THANK YOU for the donations.

Jonathan

Water Testings

Ron, Augie, and I wrapped up the last test of the season this last Sunday, September 26th.  This year we started with 16 feet of clarity in May and ended with 3 feet in late September.  The visual algae on the lake was thick on the north shoreline but average for Brooks Lake in the center.  The ‘dog days’ in late July and August had the clarity even lower which has been typical since we started monitoring clarity in 2007.

It has been another successful year of testing and monitoring every month and a big thanks goes to Ron for staying on top of the schedule and getting the samples turned in on time.  Another thank you to Augie Mader for his help and interest in caring for the lake.

We’ll be back at this come next spring.  If anyone is interested in helping, we will be doing a training in Annandale with the Wright County Soil and Water District and the Minnesota DNR in May.

Enjoy the lake!

Jonathan
